Dec 30, 2020 · A smoothbore musket, like those produced by custom gunmaker Rick Anthony, is a true multi-purpose firearm capable of shooting a load of shot for turkey, fowl or small game, or a patched round ball for large game. Smoothbores in .58, .62 or .75 calibers hold more than enough shot for turkeys. The smooth-bore requirement of the ACoE does add a bit of a "lack" of a twist to the shooting. My interest in the ammo is handloading to fill the requirement, but I have shot a bunch of factory ammo. I've owned several slug-guns and for rifled slugs have settled on the Marlin 512, outside the interest of this topic. I ran the numbers on the 5/8 ounce BRI 20 Gauge sabot slugs at 1,400 fps and it appears that they should produce the same approximate level of performance as the 45-70 405 grain factory load. Few hunters would think twice about shooting deer with the 45-70 405 grain combo, but don't think highly of shotgun slugs.
May 30, 2019 · The common lineup of gauges made today (from smallest to largest) are .410-bore (again, not actually a gauge, but a common shotgun chambering), 28-gauge, 20-gauge, 16-gauge, 12-gauge and 10 gauge. (Shotguns of long ago also included the mammoth 8-gauge and 4-gauge and the smaller 24-gauge and 32-gauge, but these are all collectors’ items now.)
Obviously, the same requirement pertains to deer, but the ballistics' needs are less dramatic. My own Chambers 20 gauge smoothbore likes 86 gr. FFg GOEX, a .609" pure lead ball from a .600" Lee mould, and a .020" patch lubed with TOW's mink oil. Noticeably less recoil than the 12, but still not exactly a .22 when shooting slugs. I'd ball park the recoil at 300 Win Mag in a pump or bolt. Naturally the recoil felt less in an 1100.

I picked up a used mossy 500 20 gauge for her and it was much better. Apr 01, 2014 · Weighing only 1 1/4 ounces, the Short Lane 12 gauge to 20 gauge Adapter is an effective, easy way to transform your 12 gauge shotgun into a reasonably effective 20 gauge shotgun out to about 30 yards. A better shotgun with a full choke could probably extend this range out to 40 yards or more. Highly recommended

A smooth bore firearm is simply never going to demonstrate the same level of accuracy as a rifle and will never excel at distances much past 100 yards with 75 yards and closer being the weapon’s ideal zone. With a 12 gauge shotgun of any sort, MOA groups are pretty much physically impossible due to the size of the projectile itself.
